    Fairy Whispers Aromatherapy Ointment
submitted by HBN President Donna Maria

I use this ointment after an evening bath and throughout the day as needed to diaper my 7-month old baby. The ointment places a barrier between her skin and a soiled diaper, therefore helping prevent diaper rash. This gently fragranced ointment is easy to make and calms my baby down and helps prepare her for restful sleep. I also use it on her skin as a light moisturizer after bathing. All ingredients are available natural and health foods stores, and the anhydrous lanolin is usually available at most pharmacies. The aromatherapy blend is optional; this product works wonderfully even without the aroma added. The shelf life if fresh oils are used to begin with is about 10 months.

    Blending Procedure:

    1. Combine all ingredients except the Fairy Whispers Aromatherapy Blend in a Pyrex measuring cup with a pour spout. Place the cup of ingredients in a hot water bath until the wax is nearly melted.

    2. Once the wax is nearly melted, remove the cup from the water bath and stir with a clean utensil (like a pop sickle stick or small spoon) to ensure an even mixture. Add the Fairy Whispers Aromatherapy Blend and stir again.

    3. Pour into jars, scraping the sides of the measuring cup well to remove as much of the product as possible. Allow to cool before capping. Store at comfortable room temperature and be sure to dip only clean fingers in the product to help protect shelf life.

    4. Fairy Whispers Aromatherapy Blend is a combination of lavender, neroli and Roman chamomile essential oils in these proportions: 80 drops lavender essential oil, 10 drops neroli essential oil and 6 drops Roman chamomile oil. This recipe makes about 1/16 ounce of the blend. Combine the drops of oil in a bottle and shake gently to mix. For best results, allow to stand a few days before using. Fairy Whispers Aromatherapy Blend can also be used as a diffuser blend in the nursery.

"I am allergic to lanolin is there something that can be used in it's place? Thank you."

"In my experience, regular vaseline/petrolium jelly works just as well as lanolin, and I have yet to meet someone allergic to it. Also, and this is just a personal preference, I tend to replace the olive oil with more sweet almond oil as olive oil's smell can overpower other fragrances. Not that it's much of an issue with lavender based fragrances, but still. I love sweet almond base oil, and it's the only one I use on my son. Soya oil is also a good choice when it's for a baby or young child. "
